Since the early 1970's the micro-shipbuilding workshop of the Bountalas family has been operating continuously until today in the area of Potamoi on the Ring Road of Skopelos and is one of the most important micro-shipbuilding workshops in Greece and internationally. Works of the Boundala family adorn private collections in various countries.
Yannis Boudalas, having learned all the know-how of shipbuilding from his father who was a shipwright, builds his works by following the typology of the ships based on shipbuilding plans and scale from the beginning to the end and the whole process followed by the traditional craftsmen in the shipyards, but he is also an electrician and has adapted his knowledge in shipbuilding by adding lighting to the interior of the ships. Still staying true to tradition, he also maintains the superstitions of the shipwrights about boarding the ship according to the moon and even in the nailing not to nail the shadow because it is bad luck. All the small details of the ships are carved in wood and all the fittings are handmade, and in the rigging, which is the placement of the ropes, all the principles of traditional sailing are faithfully followed.
Apart from the accuracy of the design and the detail of the construction, another element that constitutes a significant difference for the family's art is the minimal or no use of decorative paints but only a simple matte varnish or wax so that all the details of the ship's construction with Skopelos walnut wood are evident.
Today Yannis teaches his daughter Rigina the construction of small boats and all the wood carved details of the ship.
